Syracuse may have won 10 games last year, but they all had one thing in common: they were at home. SU head coach Younes Limam’s team didn’t win a road match once.
After beginning the season with four straight home contests, the Orange hit the road for the first time on Saturday. SU traveled to play Boston University in search of its first road win in nearly two calendar years.
On Saturday afternoon, Syracuse (5-0, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) downed Boston University (2-4, 0-0 Patriot) 5-2 to claim its first road win since defeating Boston College 4-3 on Feb. 18, 2023. While the Terriers won a doubles match early, the Orange still took the point by winning 2-of-3, improving to 11-4 in doubles this year. Syracuse also prevailed in singles, winning 4-of-6 matches.
In the No. 1 doubles matchup, Syracuse’s Shiori Ito and Nelly Knezkova defeated BU’s Uma Bakaityte and Gabriella Mikaul, 6-3. Ito and Knezkova continue to be a force as a pair, as they’ve started the season 3-of-3 together. With the win, both improved to 4-1 in doubles overall
SU’s Constance Levivier and Monika Wojcik fell to Nina Gulbransen and Sharma Sydney 6-3 in the No. 3 doubles match — just Levivier’s first doubles loss of the spring campaign. But Syracuse still took the doubles point via its No. 2 pairing of Anastasia Sysoeva and Miyuka Kimoto, winning 6-3 against Madison Liu and Blanka Demicheli after falling to James Madison on Jan. 25.
To begin singles, Sysoeva, Syracuse’s No. 2 singles contestant, downed BU’s Gabriella Mikaul 6-2 and 6-4. Despite her doubles success, the junior was winless in singles heading into Saturday. With the win, all eight Syracuse players have now won a singles match this season.
Although she didn’t suit up for doubles action, No. 3 Serafima Shastova defeated Demicheli handily, 6-1 and 6-2. After a singles loss in the season opener versus Cornell, the junior has won three consecutive contests with Demicheli as her most recent victim. Syracuse had the sophomore’s number all afternoon, with dominant victories in both singles and doubles.
In a thriller, Syracuse’s No. 4 Ito fell to the Terriers’ Liu, 7-6 and 7-6. Liu got the better of SU’s senior and edged her out with two straight tiebreaker wins. Saturday’s defeat is Ito’s first singles loss of the spring.
The Terriers kept their momentum going in the No. 5 affair, where Zhao took down Levivier, 6-3 and 6-1. Like Ito, this was Levivier’s first singles defeat of the campaign.
Unlike Levivier and Ito, No. 6 Wojcik remained undefeated in singles play after knocking off Sydney Sharma, 6-2 and 6-3. Fresh off earning ACC Freshman of the Week honors, Wojcik continues to play an integral role in Syracuse’s early success this season.
With another successful outing in the books, the Orange are now 25-5 in singles play this spring. On top of that, they’ve also won 27 sets by either a 6-0, 6-1, or 6-2 score. But more importantly, SU finally captured its elusive road victory.
