Skipping class, political correctness, Uber and graduation speakers: these are among the buzzworthy topics the most popular Opinion columns of March 2016 tackled.

Business

Horn: “As long as the state can insure that Uber and other transportation services are all following the same set of base regulations, the company should be welcomed into upstate roadways.”

Business columnist Theo Horn discussed why New York legislators should critically examine Uber to ensure that the company follows the same rules as other regional ride-hailing services.

Editorial Board

The Daily Orange Editorial Board: “That is not to say that Donald Newhouse will not give an impactful speech or that SU’s communications school is not something to be proud of. But systematically choosing individuals who are not representative or even relevant to the greater student body perpetuates a Newhouse-centric narrative that overlooks the successes and prestige of SU’s other schools.”

The Daily Orange Editorial Board responded to the decision of Donald Newhouse as this year’s commencement speaker and argued that the decision perpetuates a historic lack of race and gender diversity.

Schmit: “(Journalist Milo) Yiannopoulos’ career ultimately stems from the misunderstanding of the feminist agenda. And although his rants probably won’t be heard on Syracuse University’s campus, the fact that he is able to tour extensively at institutions of higher education with his lunacy points to the apathy of millennials’ politically correct, or PC, attitudes.”

Gender and Sexuality columnist Brontë Schmit explained how journalist Milo Yiannopoulos’ anti-feminist activism has gained popularity as the result of college students’ ideological passivity.

Liberal

Tomasello: “With Trump almost universally regarded as the comic relief of the election, it was all fun, games and guilty pleasures. His campaign quickly became a bet of the Trump that can’t be trumped, leaving us in disbelief as each bigoted or sexist blunder believed to be political suicide only fueled his campaign and his rock solid ego.”

Liberal columnist Mia Tomasello took on Donald Trump’s unlikely rise to political fame as an attention-grabbing Republican front-runner.

Student Life

Jaipuriar: “So while it’s tempting to miss those 8 a.m. classes and large lectures that don’t take attendance, there is a heavy financial consequence of this seemingly harmless behavior. But, at the same time, it shouldn’t be forgotten that students are also paying for the freedom to choose how to spend our time in an academic setting and not have our lives micromanaged, as if we are in K-12.”

Student Life columnist Rashika Jaipuriar examined the pros and cons of missing class in regard to tuition, personal development and academic success.
