Syracuse Relay for Life is holding a four-day Campus Recruitment Challenge for this year’s event.

The Syracuse University/SUNY-ESF Relay for Life event will take place on April 18 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the Carrier Dome. Organizers are expecting around 2,000 participants at this year’s relay and teams are continuing to sign up for the event.

Last year, SU Relay raised $80,000, but this year the group’s goal is to raise $120,000. Registration for the event costs $10.

Jamie Goldfarb, a senior in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics who is on the SU Relay planning committee, said the group had its first kickoff in December to let people know about Relay for Life. The group is hoping to team up with Funk ’n Waffles to hold another event and has a fundraiser planned for Feb. 19 with Tully’s and an Insomnia event underway.

Relay for Life has inspired 1.7 million participants to raise $5 billion for the American Cancer Society. Started in 1985 by Dr. Gordon Klatt, Relay for Life is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Since its creation, 150,000 teams and 250,000 survivors have participated in 900 annual events globally, said Adriana Sereno, the community manager for the Relay for Life Eastern division of the American Cancer Society. Sereno said she hopes to see more participants from SUNY-ESF at this year’s event.

The night typically includes an opening ceremony, a survivor lap, team fundraisers, a luminary ceremony that honors and memorializes cancer patients, musical performances and dancing, games, hair donations and food. This year’s event is still in the planning stages said Nick Palmateer, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences and SU Relay for Life committee member.
